Just wanted to congratulate the three winners of the IlluXcon scholarship competition. Bernadette Carstensen is a recent grad of the CCAD Illustration department, and no doubt a rising star (not to mention an awesome model.... and no, I have not finished the painting, lol) I'll look forward to meeting Sam Connelly and J.Edwin Stevens at the event. Great work all of you, and I'll see you in November.

Back to the board

Due to my crazy schedule finding time to paint has been tough, but I started back into a piece thats been sitting around the studio. It may take awhile since I can only find small blocks of time, but a little work is better than none at all. I'll keep you all updated.

I was pondering the question of whether a home is an investment or a "money pit". I just wanted to see if I could find an image that would work with either idea .... money coming in, or going out. I find a certain charm in this one.

I was sitting in front of the TV and a character caught my eye ..... he reminded me of something, and after a little while his alter ego appeared. Sometimes even the tiniest sketches can have personality.

Paige Kovach ... A nod to my talented daughter

When my 13 year old daughter heads to the mall it always sends me into a panic, unless of course she has a camera in her hand. It turns out she has the eye of a photographer and somehow manages to see 'the design" of everything. Paige is a storyteller, and whether using her art, photography or writing, she always keeps us interested. I couldn't be more proud of her.

As a change of pace, I thought I'd add a few sketches done by my son Evan when he was 9 and 10 years old. Evan has had a pencil in his hand every day for as long as I can remember. If he keeps this up he's going to make his old man look like a total amateur. The sketch of the girl is my daughter Paige. After seeing an assignment from a college course I teach, he decided to do his own version .... I'm pretty sure in nine years he'll be good enough to teach in my place. I'm a proud Dad!

A few photos from Illuxcon in Altoona, PA. The event was a blast and it was wonderful to meet, and hang out with, some great Artists, Collectors and Fans. Hats off to Pat and Jeannie Wilshire, and all those involved in this great event. I hope I have the opportunity to be a part of Illuxcon 09!

A recently completed cover image for New Physician Magazine. The theme was depression in medical students, and the image of drowning and sinking under the pressure struck me immediately. It turned out to be a fun project despite the serious subject matter, and was one of the few I have worked on lately that allowed me freedom from concept to finish. Time to go find a few more like that.
